The Hummers Have Hatched!

We’ve never been able to find the nests, but we always know when the little hummingbird babies have left them.  It happened yesterday.  All of a sudden they were swarming the feeder like big bugs and making all kinds of hummingbird noises.  Squeaky little chirps and the humming sound of their wings.   Look at this with two beaks in the same drinking hole.

P1060997These pictures are from early this morning.  (Not the clearest, because of all the layers of glass.)  Right now, it’s around 8 hours later and the feeder is below half full.  I’ll be making sugar water for them until they leave in early to mid September.  I’ve got to remember to add sugar to my shopping list.  Lots of sugar!

I wish we would get that many hummers around out feeders. I wonder if Bill has them in the wrong place. He has them hanging from a branch in our evergreen tree. Maybe they should be in the open more ya think?

Cindy, this is spectacular! I am so enthralled; wish you could have heard my intake of breath! Gorgeous pictures. I love hummers but didn't set up a feeder here yet. Next year, as long as it's a bit cooler.
Have you ever seen photos of a hummer's tongue that goes down into the drinking hole? Amazing is an understatement. That tongue must be as long as they are, lol.
Gosh, I love your site :-)

Yipeeee!! I've always admired those little critters. Have you ever seen one of their nests? An Uncle told me once that most people go through life and never see one. I've fortunately seen 2. Little hanging baskets.

I'm so jealous! My hummers quit coming around and I have no idea why. Really bummed about that. Great captures Cindy.

@Sherry...I'm not sure about the best place to put the feeders. We have our hanging in front of a window so we can see the little buggers.
@Jenny D...I saw a show on PBS about hummers and saw how they feed and catch insects too. Very interesting little birds.
@Curtis...you lucky duck! I suspect they nest in a scrub oak tree right near our cabin, but I've never been able to find a nest, but I'll look for a little hanging basket.

Iknow I have NEVER seen that many at a feeder in my life except in pictures and yours are wonderful to me. They look like they are doing okay. If you feed them they will stick around I am sure. Wonderful post!

How great they are feeding away at your feeder. I have seen the nests all hiding in thick bushes. They like the feeder in open spaces so they can see any predators. How exciting Cindy.

I have to fill my feeders about every third day. LOVE seeing your hummingbird babies and parent. Any days with a hummingbird, eagle or hawk in it is a good day.

Wonderful, wonderful photo's Cindy, even though shot through glass, it's a privilege to be able to view the little creatures. My first viewing of them in fact...Thank you. x
