There's not much going on around here so I did something a little different for today.  I have no idea why he wanted to do this, but I was there to make this video.

Things are finally growing around here. Wildflowers, cucumbers, cabbage, zucchini and an Eastern Hog-nosed snake!

The bugs are still bad, but other than that, we are can't complain. The turtles are starting to lay their eggs and the little birds are hatching. In this grouse picture there are two little ones in it. Very hard to see and if I hadn't seen them cross the road with mom, I would have never noticed them. Perfectly camouflaged.

Today on our way into town we passed the guy with two horses and later in the day, waaaaaay out in the boonies we saw the guy on that serious mountain bike. We stopped to talk with him and he said he was out geocaching. He said he has 70 of them around the area. Shortly after we talked with him it started to pour, but he was prepared for rain and bugs...which are unbelievable! The mosquitoes have hatched and they're hungry!

We've been enjoying some beautiful weather this week.  If every day of summer was like this, I'd be a happy camper.

It's nice to see the wildflowers blooming with new ones every week.  I almost gave up on the jack-in-the-pulpit but it finally broke through and is standing tall.  The trilliums are about done for this year.

We haven't seen the bear family since the other morning.  Jim posed in the same place mama bear stood for size comparison.  She doesn't look quite as big now does she?  I was surprised by this.

Same with this little squirt.

Another surprise was discovering a blue bird decided to nest in the old junky birdhouse.  I saw a bird on top of it, took a picture and sure enough, mama blue bird!  This year the tree swallows beat her to the other boxes.  Just goes to show you, the blue birds haven't read the books saying what kind of nest box they have to have.

We got back to the cabin yesterday only to find our Internet was out.  I called, went through the normal rigamaroll and they finally decided to send out a repairman.  Come to find out the wiring etc. for our DSL is getting old and occasionally needs to be reset.  So if anyone missed me, that's why.

On Sunday we had a great time at my nieces graduation party on the Wisconsin River.  All week the  forecast showed a chance of rain but luckily it held off until about the last half hour on the river.  It was a gentle rain and as far as I know, no one melted.

Last night our neighbor called saying a bear family was heading our way.  I got my camera ready and went from window to window looking for them.  Jim spotted them coming up the path near the cabin.  I learned to never take pictures through a screen, as you can tell from this picture.

But then they came around in front and checked out the feeders.

Junior trying to be just like mom.

They cruised through here again this morning and left as quickly as they appeared.

I love seeing bears and this is the first time we've seen little cubs around here.  Hopefully they'll find some good natural food soon so they don't become pests.

The only exciting thing that happened today was we saw the sunshine!  The last time we saw it was on Monday.

I walked past the Little Free Library  again today and it was still empty. So I decided it was time to put some books in it.  You can donate any kind of book you'd like, so I added some novels, a book about Wisconsin and a cookbook.  This is really a cool idea.  It's a small wooden box that the 'owner' can decorate however they please.  The one near us must be 'owned' by the school because it's decorated just like their kiosk for displaying school notices.

From their website....

  • To promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide.
  • To build a sense of community as we share skills, creativity and wisdom across generations.

Our Goal

To build 2,510 Libraries--as many as Andrew Carnegie--and keep going!

Some pictures from around the 'hood. I was surprised and very happy to see we have a Little Free Library box just down the street from us. I'll definitely donate some books to it. It was nice walking around seeing and smelling so many pretty flowers.

We're back home for a week. On our way back we stopped to visit and to wish my brother a happy birthday. He didn't know we were coming, so it was neat to surprise him.  We brought him a pie and one of his friends stopped by also bringing a pie.  So instead of having birthday cake, we all sat around eating pie.

Boy, did the grass ever grow while we were gone!  Yikes!  We also had a great crop of dandelions.

Hopefully it will stop raining for awhile and things can dry out a bit.

We saw a bear when we were out walking this morning! And of course it was the one time I didn't have a regular camera along. I took this picture with my iPhone and you can see we weren't very far away from it.

Good thing Molly's eyes aren't too good anymore. She never saw it, but she sure stopped at that spot when we got to that bend in the road.

Later in the afternoon we were coming back from the Transfer Station and saw this porcupine walking down the middle of the road.  After it stopped to scratch itself, it decided to go the other way.

It was a good day for seeing wildlife.
