Today is the unofficial last day of summer which is fine with me.  I love fall, so bring it on!  Lots of activity around the Northland this weekend.  Today was the last day the bear hunters can train their dogs until the hunt starts on Wednesday and they were out in full force this morning.

We went to a couple garage sales and Jim hit the jackpot at one that had lots of "guy stuff".  He bought some hand tools, a snow rake and some other things that were a mystery to me, but that's not unusual.

We saw these guys wading out in the St. Croix River.  A perfect day for bass fishing.

And then when we got home this garter snake was lounging on some stones near the cabin.  I scared it away after I took its picture.

Soon the rain will be here along with some nice cool air.  Ahhh, should be good sleeping tonight!

Today I went up to Superior to check out their Downtown Farmers Market.  I really had no idea what to expect or what the prices would be like.  There was a nice variety of produce, but not too many sellers.  Some of the prices were a little high but most were very fair.

FYI...the caramels were awesome and the tomatoes are very sweet.  The basil will be used in a salad I'll make tomorrow.  The tomatoes on the left are called Easter egg tomatoes (I think that's what theseller called them) and the ones on the right are called Juliette....not Roma's, but a Roma shaped cherry tomato.  A guy was walking around giving out shopping bags.  That's what's in the background of this picture.

Continuing with yesterday's theme...you never know what we'll see around here.  Today there were two sandhill cranes and some geese in our neighbors hay field.

A few days ago I saw a whole bunch of turkeys in the same area.

On Saturday after stopping at a friends cabin I rook this bad picture of a buck crossing the road.

And to change subjects a bit...the hot weather has really helped our garden plants.  We've had a couple tomatoes, 3 or 4 cabbages and now the zucchinis are really taking off.  I'd better pick these tomorrow or else they'll get gigantic and I'll have to make zucchini bread or some other sweet treat.  The small ones are pretty good in salads.

Whew, it was a hot and muggy night and this morning when we were off for our little drive around the 'hood I saw something black on the road up ahead of us.  At first I thought it was a turkey.  Well, it WAS foggy and my depth perception may be a tad off, but as we got closer I could see it was a bear.  So naturally, I started taking pictures.  This was after we got a little closer.Mama bear

And then out came the cubs!

Mama and two cubs

Is that last one cute or what?

Slow poke cub

We never know what we'll see on our morning drives. Today's was special!

It was too damned hot for me today!

So we decided it would be a good day to go to the Dairy Queen before it closes shortly after Labor Day.

Oh ya!  There's nothing I like better than a hot fudge sundae on a frickin' hot Sunday!

I'm back!  Well, I've been back from my trip for a few weeks now, but now I'm back to adding something here on a regular basis again.

Today was gorgeous!  After a couple hot and humid days it was nice to be able to enjoy a perfect summer day.  Although...I didn't like this sign.  The thought of snow is not a pleasant one for me.

I'd be more than happy seeing birds nests and yellow flowers for another couple, three months...or more!

I know those aren't real eggs, but I didn't like looking at an empty nest.
