An Amazing Day

Today was one of those days that turned out to be way better than I expected.  Jim had pruned lots of branches on the big spruce in front of the house and had a pickup load of brush to get rid of.   We decided to take a drive up to our woods near the Dells to get rid of it and he needed to cover some wood piles before the snow comes this weekend.  So while he was doing that Molly and I took a walk down the road.  As soon as we got out of the truck, all we could hear was the sound of Sand Hill cranes.  As we got to the end of the road and looked out over the open field, I could see the sky was full of them.  At the time I thought they were flying away from me, but a few minutes later, they were right overhead.   P1090425And they kept coming and coming.  There were hundreds of them.  You may want to click on this to see a larger image.    P1090433But wait, there’s more!  As we were heading to Portage for some shopping, just a few miles down the road we saw the field where they landed.

Down the road a few miles more, we came to another spot where hundreds more were hanging out.  Some how they must know snow and cold weather is coming.  They’ll continue their migration south tomorrow and hopefully will be out of here before the 3-7” of snow starts on Friday.

The second amazing thing happened when we were at Walmart.  You know how you just never know who you’ll see when you’re at Walmart?  While walking down an aisle, I was behind an elderly woman and even from the back, I immediately knew she was my 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Millegan.  Weird huh?  I knew it was her just by seeing her hair.  She always wore her long hair up in a very nice style, with little ringlets at the side of her face.  The only difference now was her hair was a beautiful shade of white.  I stopped and told her who I was and she said, “yes, I would’ve have recognized you too”.  Now if that’s not amazing enough, here’s more.  She was in the same school class as my dad, so that makes her 91 years old!   Seeing her, really made my day.  She’s the only thing I remember about second grade and it was great that we both remembered each other.  I really wish I would’ve thought to have someone take a picture of us.  That would’ve been the icing on the cake!

What a great, great day! I am amazed at the heron photos, and yes, I enlarged every single one of them. Astounding! The next to the last, if they'd only been pink, reminded me of the ad shots for all the pink flamingos in Florida, lol. But Cindy, you got some fabulous shots there! And then your teacher -- what are the odds of that!?! Oh for a camera! :D
XOXOXO I really enjoyed this post

....and I came all the way back to fix "herons" to "CRANES". Ask me if I feel really stupid, lol

Don't feel stupid Jenny...they do look like herons. Actually, they look kind of ghostly at this time of the year. In the summer, they're a gorgeous rusty brown color. Who knows what happens to all that color.

What an amazing day you had. The photos are wonderful!
I can only remember one teacher from my childhood. What are the odds that you ran into your teacher. Probably right up there number wise.

Cindy what an awesome day you had!!

The cranes we never see flying South..but when there is a hurricane..down South from us..we see them flying North to get out of the path. They are so loud sounding!!

Maybe you could find out her address and go visit her and take some pictures.

Hugs Cindy from Rick-Rack and Gingham.

You sure did have an amazing day! Love the photos you took. I cannot imagine seeing so many in the sky. Oh lucky you. Thanks for sharing this my dear. Very cool about seeing your teacher. Was she carrying a wooden ruler? ;-)
Have an amazing weekend too!

Had to run over one last time to "crane" my neck. Sheesh. Really I wanted to say thanks for not thinking it was all too, too red...but you might change your mind today, lol. Let me know what you think.

That was a great day. Just love when things like that happen. A picture of the two of you would have been nice. Those pictures are just awesome. The wonderful things you see.

You sure seem to have the knack to be in the right place at the right time. I've only seen one crane and that was years ago. Awesome pictures.
I would have been great to get a pic of the two of you together. Who knows, you might run into her again someday.
Have a good weekend Cindy.

Oh my gosh Cindy this just tickles me to death! You got some amazing shots of them too!!! I hope they're headed this way and the Hop-In Refuge will be covered with them soon. Oh I'm so excited I can't stand it. lol
And how awesome that you and Ms Millegan found each other after all these yrs. I have such a bad memory when it comes to high school, I don't know that I would be able to recognize my teachers anymore. lol
