Quiet Time in the Northland

Like the title says, it’s getting very quiet around here.   About the only wildlife we’re seeing now are deer and eagles.  This little doe was standing along the edge of a dirt road when I spotted her.  Jim backed up and she just stood there while I took her picture .  She was turning her ears from side to side listening for sounds of danger.  I really like this picture of her in a totally natural setting.  P1090154The eagles have been feasting on road kill and deer carcasses.  It’s not unusual to see  eagles every day.P1090169 And then there’s the mysterious stuff.  Just when I thought all the bears are in dens, I see this track frozen in some mud.P1090172 The day after Halloween, I saw this skeleton looking image in a pool of water.  Aliens perhaps?P1090145 And this morning on our walk we saw some confused willows.  It’s been nice, but I didn’t think it was warm enough for pussy willows to bud out.P1090185

I want to thank everyone again for all the kind words, thoughts and prayers you sent me on the recent passing of my aunt and uncle.  Uncle Wally’s funeral was on Saturday and I want to share this with all of you.  This is the back side of the little memory card that was handed out.  He was a character and a real Honey.Uncle Wally

The pictures are great Cindy. Do you think perhaps that is big foot's footprints> ;-)
Your uncle had a wonderful sense of humor. I think I would have enjoyed knowing him.

Oh my those are big pawprints! Cindy you may have bigfoot on your hands! The alien thing just looks creepy! lol

Your uncle Wally sounds like a fun-loving man. I know he will be missed my many.

Enjoy your quiet time girl!

I loved the card from your uncle's service. What a guy! And what a cutie, too! Gosh, who wouldn't be crazy about him. His name fit him to a T.
Cindy, all the photos are wonderful as usual, but I have to ask about 1 of them, the first one of the deer. I even clicked on it to enlarge it. What's that brown, big patch on her lower chest and sort of between her front legs? It almost looks like she's shedding but that can't be. Is it an illusion from a part of the ground? I know I'm going to feel really silly, lol. Oh, and I can't believe you haven't named her yet :D

Good question Jenny. I had to ask Jim myself because I wasn't sure. It's called the brisket and is just part of it's coloration. The size and color can vary from deer to deer. Another thing that's different is some have much larger white patches at the top of their neck. It's all part of their camouflage.

Amazing, Cindy! Thanks for finding that out as I never would have known what to call it to even look it up for myself, lol. It almost looked like an "opening" but I can see it's just the coloration now -- almost like a trompe l'oeil painting effect. Fascinating. Thanks again :)

Love the pictures, especially the first one of the doe. Looks like it was posing for you.

Your Uncle sounded like a great man and I'm sure he's missed by many. His card makes me smile though, sounds like the type of man that was quick to bring a smile to a persons face.

Love this blog post as it tells what is going on in the northland..things are changing daily I am sure. Lovely shots of nature. We see a lot of does here and their babies but few Bucks.. I guess they are keeping low as it IS bow hunting season and nearly hunting season too. Your uncle Wally sounds like quite a character to think of that on his card ahead of time. Thinking of you all. : )

I know I would have liked Uncle Wally he sounds like he was quite the character.

The pictures are great and I agree with you about the deer photo. A natural shot are always the best ones.

Great photos, especially the doe as she stood still for you. Uncle Wally sure had a good sense of humor. A nice looking man too, must have been a handsome young man.
