Tuesday

What’s that I smell?

I’m laying there in bed, not quite ready to get up and all of a sudden I notice a very unusual smell.  Hmmm, what is that?  It’s not coffee or the wood burner.  Could it be toast?  No, toast smells lots different than this.  It smells like something freshly baked, but who’s been in my kitchen baking before 6:00 am?

Okay, so curiosity got the best of me, so I got up to investigate this new smell.  Hmmm, there’s no one in the house but me, but there sitting on the stove cooling off, is a pan of cornbread.  Newly trained baker Jim, decided as long as he was up and still hungry for cornbread, he’d make it all by himself.  While it was cooling, he took Molly for their morning walk.  When they got back we cut into the still warm cornbread.  And let me tell you it was awesome!  Fresh, hot cornbread with a little honey to go along with my morning coffee…life doesn’t get much better than that!

This afternoon, I’m going to teach him how to make split pea soup.  It’s really easy, but hey, if I can get someone else to do the cooking, I’m all for it.

We got just over 3” of snow last night, but at least it’s not as cold as it’s been recently.  Yesterday we did a neighborhood walk and the sidewalks are still a mess.  I can tolerate the cold and snow becomes a major inconvenience, but it’s the ice I really dislike.  The City has a website where you can report sidewalks that haven’t been cleared, but I’d be reporting half of the houses around here.  That’s the reason we like to take a drive out in the country and walk down some back road.  This is from a road we walked on last Saturday when it was still really cold.P1090515

I don’t know where they’re coming from, but we have more darned mourning doves around here than I’ve ever seen before.  Some days the feeder is so full of them, there’s no room for even a little chickadee to jump in for seed.  These were waiting their turn to get some free food. P1090521Time for the Pea Soup class to convene.  I know it’s going to be a delicious pot of soup.

Cindy, the doves are the same here! I've never seen so many in my life. Even the jays that are usually so aggressive stand to the side while the doves in droves take over. Wonder why? Now hearing it's the same for you, it's like a preparation for "The Doves That Ate The World".
Now to the foooooood: Here's my question. How much will you take for Jim? I'd be willing to make you a rich woman. Whatdoyasay? I could use someone that handy around here and now that he can cook, wellllll, I'm putting in the first bid :D

You know, my Jim loved to cook and after we were both retired I let him cook to his heart's content. Keep training your Jim and sit back and reap the rewards! ;-)
Nerry Christmas!!!

In case you are wondering, I meant to say Merry Christmas. Not sure what Nerry means.

Oh lucky you. Sounds like Jim is becoming the great baker. Pea soup sounds great! I am so glad we don't have to shovel snow! I hope I didn't jinx it now.

During dove season here this year..I always go out and say outloud..come on over little ones you are safe here..I think they are God's chosen bird..lol anyhow..I have a picture of about 20 of the doves..convening on the small piece of sidewalk..right at the pools edge..it is funny because you can hear the guns going off with the hunters..and my little doves are sunbathing at the resort..lol

Keep safe on that ice.

Hugs.. Cindy from Rick-Rack and Gingham

So this is where the doves went?? lol I haven't seen any hanging around in awhile.
Kudos to Jim for making a delicious breakfast for you. Gotta love a man who gets up to cook!

We have a lot of doves here too! Hmm are being invaded? Kudos to Jim! A man that can cook or is at least willing to try is a keeper. Gene's been doing more of it too since my work schedule is kinda crazy. He's got a big pot of chili perfected.

I used the puppy dog training concept when it comes to Jim's cooking. Give him lots of praise and tell him he's such a good boy. LOL

Mind if I send Bill over for some cooking lessons? I absolutely LOVE cornbread and anything else you'd like to teach him will be fine with me :)

Shhhhhh, be very quiet. I just tip-toed in to give Jim and quick little rub behind the ear ;) I figure if I do this enough, I might wake up to a pot of something great to eat in my kitchen! What? Is that cornbread I smell?
